I was looking hard for quality free hosting and I found this one recently. It's by far the best I tested. Really just like paid shared hosting with cPanel, FTP, mySQL, all what's needed to setup a site.
You can host your own domain if you choose so. When you enter your hosting account, there is a pop-up with a getting started link which leads to very useful info especially for newbies to learn the ins and outs of webhosting. 
There are lots of templates, logos, banners within your account to download. You may setup a CMS (e107) based site, a forum or just a plain HTML website. I had mixed feelings with my installations of Joomla and wordpress here.
