There are many HTML tutorials available on the web. The one I would recommend having a look at is the EasyWebTutorial written by Guido W. Stiehle. You can download the whole package to your PC or doing it online.

Note: For the replacement of the Windows Notepad mentioned in the tutorial there is also an open source free alternative downloadable here , it's got similar capabilities like the suggested TextPad.
A very good free alternative to the suggested HTML editor 1stPage2000 is CoffeeCup which I used quite some time during my Windows-Time, the link goes straight to the free version.
