History of Poker in America
In the Americas, the history of poker is better documented.
When European settlers came to America, they took the gambling games along with them. The gambling games were simplified further and finally evolved into a game that is now played in casinos all over the world.
The Italians of those days christened these places as “casinos”, probably a form from the word “casa,” which means house in English. As time passed by, casino began focusing on gambling activities. By the 19th century, casinos are so embedded to the word gambling.
The Chinese immigrants brought Lotteries to America during the 1800s. Gambling games were now played inside makeshift buildings that were aimed at providing entertainment to people. Inside these special buildings, people could dance, and listen to music, aside from gambling. In the early days, a game was once described and played with a deck of 20 cards. Four players will then bet on which player’s hand will be found the most valuable.
Based on document records, the poker game journeyed from New Orleans by steamboat up the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. The poker game eventually spread via train and wagon. Then the game spread like wildfire to the rest of the Americas. Knowledge of the game reached and headed to the west alongside the California Gold Rush. Then the game adopted the full 52-card English deck.
The flush was then introduced to this card game, as time passed by, other additions to the game were made during the era of the American Civil War. Various modifications of the poker game were introduced including the draw poker, the stud poker which is a five-card variant of the poker game, and the straight poker.
In the year 1875, American players introduced the wild card. Around 1900, developments on the game of poker paved the way for the lowball and split-pot poker. In the year 1925, community card poker games were introduced.
In the Americas, during the early 19th century, an English actor by the name of Joseph Cromwell made references to a game, called poker.
Another individual by the name of Jonathan Green also made a written reference to a game called poker in his book. The book, “An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling” was copyrighted last year 1843. In this book, he mentions certain rules to a game that he described as a “cheating game.” This cheating game is being played on the Mississippi riverboats during that time.
Some historians believe that Green was one of the first to identify this “cheating game” under the name poker.
The European face of poker, however, ended when the joker card was introduced to the game as a wild card in the year 1875.
In 1910, the state of Nevada declared betting games a felony and illegal before the law.
The eventual spread of the poker game to other countries, especially in the Asian countries, was attributed to the US military.
The poker game, however, was not always a favorable game. Before the 1970s, Poker was usually not played at casinos because of the absence of security measures to keep out the cheaters of the game. Even up to the 1980s up to the 90s, casinos usually don’t open poker game rooms in favor of roulette and black jack.
The state of California legitimized the draw poker because the draw poker was said to be based on the skill level of the player and the anti-gambling laws implemented during that time have no power against it. The Attorney General of California, however, declared the stud poker as illegal because the game is based on chance.
With this decision, the draw poker games developed and spread out across the nation. By 1931, the state of Nevada reversed its earlier decision and legalized casino gambling.
